Day Camps

CLT MTB CAMP is open to competent riders age *8 -12 years old. All participants are required to be able to ride their bike, use the brakes, shift gears, and have some experience riding trails. Riders should be on a mountain bike with 24" wheels or larger to ensure their ability to enjoy the rough terrain of mountain bike trails and maintain a speed comfortable for the entire group. Each camp session will be limited to 12 riders (minimum of 6 per session) and will be supported by 3 staff members. Well, okay 2.5 staff members, as one of those is my 11 year old daughter, Matilda.
*Younger riders (6 or 7yrs old) may be considered, based on ability and experience. Face it, we've all seen some 6 year olds who can shred… I’m looking at you, Foster!

We will meet daily from 7:30am - 6:00pm every-other week June 10 - August 23 at a Charlotte-area park with access to mountain bike trails, covered picnic area, bathrooms, and playground. Riders can be dropped off as late as 9:00am and picked up as early as 4:30pm. A complete schedule of our 6 scheduled camp sessions can be seen below.

CLT MTB CAMP focuses on teaching and reinforcing the proper techniques of riding mountain bikes using  BICP (Bike Instructor Certification Program), PMBIA (Professional Mountain Bike Instructor Association), and NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) teaching fundamentals to create a program that is suitable for young riders. We will also have a lot of fun off-bike enjoying a range of other age-appropriate activities!

A total of 15 skills and techniques will be instructed each week. Daily instruction will review the previous days to create a strong foundation and build upon that foundation to develop a well-rounded rider with the fundamentals necessary to become an accomplished mountain biker.

At CLT MTB CAMPS, our top priority is the safety of our young riders. We focus a good bit of time each session making sure that our riders stay safe. This includes encouraging them to not take big risks on the trail, keeping both wheels on the ground as much as possible, staying on the trail at all times while riding, and staying on the lookout for hazards that could cause injury. Additionally, CLT MTB riders will be asked to choose a partner they stick with on the trail, never be alone anywhere at the park, always be close to a CLT MTB staff member, and we will always be in constant contact with each other on the trail using GMRS Walkie-Talkies distributed to each pair at the beginning of each day.

All CLT MTB CAMP riders re responsible for bringing their own lunch, snacks, and hydration packs. We will stop regularly throughout the day for small snacks, so pack energy/granola bars, fruit gummies, nuts, and other nutritious snacks that riders can keep in their packs. Lunches will be stored in a gigantic cooler (with ice) that will be provided by CLTMTB, as well as some special sports drinks or juices that we will enjoy during lunch only, other than that we will be drinking water from our hydration packs all day.

Bike Transport & Storage

CLT MTB can store and transport a camper’s bike throughout the week to alleviate the need for you to bring your rider’s bike back and forth to camp every day of the week. We have a 16’ enclosed, locked box trailer that we bring to every camp day that we will also use to secure our gear, bikes, extra clothing, etc. when it is not in use. Simply bring your rider and bike on Monday, and we’ll take care of the bike until Friday pickup. This service is offered as a courtesy and is NOT required.

Rain or Shine

CLT MTB CAMPS will be held rain or shine and registration fees will not be refunded due to rain. Each park has large parking lot areas where we can work on drills and skills if trails are too wet to ride (and if the parking lot isn't too slippery). Each park venue features covered picnic shelters which will allow us a place to get out of the rain. During rainouts, we will expand the time we cover on: bike maintenance, trailside repairs, off-bike instruction, first aid, calisthenics, and other things related to mountain biking and what mountain bikers do when it rains and you can't ride on the trails. Yes, Matilda wrote most of that.

Additional Skills & Instruction

In addition to the on-bike skills and instruction which will be the main focus of CLT MTB CAMP, we will also cover the following topics each week in the effort to teach our young riders how to be more well-rounded athletes and responsible human beings.

  • Nutrition & Hydration

  • Basic Trailside First Aid

  • Balance (Slackline, balance beam)

  • Physical Fitness (Basic Calisthenics)

  • Trail Stewardship

  • Outdoorsmanship

  • Bike Maintenance

  • Trailside Repairs

August 5-9 @ Park Road Park

CLT MTB CAMP Session #5 brings us back to to the newly-renovated Park Road Park. This is a beautiful park located close to downtown Charlotte, near the SouthPark area. Directly adjacent to the infamous “Back Yard Trails”, Park Road Park also has it’s own system of singletrack trails with lots of great features to challenge young riders. Park Road Park also has immediate access to a section of the greenway/Cross-Charlotte Trail where we will also spend some time riding. We will have access to a brand new covered picnic area for lunch/snack breaks and shade, a huge playground area, and newly-renovated bathrooms. This will be our first year at Park Road Park and we are very excited to add this venue to our schedule for 2019!

August 19-23 @ Colonel Francis Beatty Park

CLT MTB CAMP Session #6 completes the Summer back at beautiful Colonel Francis Beatty Park in Matthews. Colonel Francis Beatty Park features a 5.75 mile singletrack loop with very little elevation gain. The mildly-technical terrain is perfect for developing young riders' skills. The first few days of the week will focus mainly on riding the outer loop around the park and identifying key areas/features where we will "session" obstacles which will help to reinforce the skills & techniques taught on flatland in the mornings. Later in the week, once all riders are comfortable with their new skills, we will venture to the more advanced terrain while always staying safe and avoiding the most advanced features and technical obstacles. Col. Francis Beatty Park also  features a very nice playground where we will take breaks and let our young riders play.
