Jr. Development

CLT MTB CAMP is proud to announce a Summer Development program for intermediate-to-advanced riders aged 12 - 15. This program is similar to our Summer Camp curriculum, however it is tailored to older riders and focuses on NICA Student Athelete Development. We will quickly move through the Essentials and Basic Skills during the first half of Day 1, then move into more advanced skills, spending a great deal of time on: Cornering, Bike & Body Separation, Pumping, Line Selection, Passing, Race Starts, and other Race-Specific riding skills. We will also work on developing skills that make great riders and racers including: nutrition & hydration, balance, sportsmanship, trailside repairs, and more… These 2 sessions will both be held at North Mecklenburg Park and will be limited to only 8 riders, ages 12 - 15.

$420 per Session Scroll down for more information.

Progression

A total of 15 skills and techniques will be instructed each week. Daily instruction will review the previous days to create a strong foundation and build upon that foundation to develop a well-rounded rider with the fundamentals necessary to become an accomplished mountain biker.

Safety

At CLT MTB CAMPS, our top priority is the safety of our young riders. We focus a good bit of time each session making sure that our riders stay safe. This includes encouraging them to not take big risks on the trail, keeping both wheels on the ground as much as possible, staying on the trail at all times while riding, and staying on the lookout for hazards that could cause injury. Additionally, CLT MTB riders will be asked to choose a partner they stick with on the trail, never be alone anywhere at the park, always be close to a CLT MTB staff member, and we will always be in constant contact with each other on the trail using GMRS Walkie-Talkies distributed to each pair at the beginning of each day.

Nutrition/Hydration

All CLT MTB CAMP riders re responsible for bringing their own lunch, snacks, and hydration packs. We will stop regularly throughout the day for small snacks, so pack energy/granola bars, fruit gummies, nuts, and other nutritious snacks that riders can keep in their packs. Lunches will be stored in a gigantic cooler (with ice) that will be provided by CLTMTB, as well as some special sports drinks or juices that we will enjoy during lunch only, other than that we will be drinking water from our hydration packs all day.

Bike Transport & Storage

CLT MTB can store and transport a camper’s bike throughout the week to alleviate the need for you to bring your rider’s bike back and forth to camp every day of the week. We have a 16’ enclosed, locked box trailer that we bring to every camp day that we will also use to secure our gear, bikes, extra clothing, etc. when it is not in use. Simply bring your rider and bike on Monday, and we’ll take care of the bike until Friday pickup. This service is offered as a courtesy and is NOT required. *Due to the growth or participation in our camp program, but NOT of our trailer, space is limited. So please know this is first come/first served and we do NOT have room for every single camper’s bike in our trailer…

Rain or Shine

CLT MTB CAMPS will be held rain or shine and registration fees will not be refunded due to rain. Each park has large parking lot areas where we can work on drills and skills if trails are too wet to ride (and if the parking lot isn't too slippery). Each park venue features covered picnic shelters which will allow us a place to get out of the rain. During rainouts, we will expand the time we cover on: bike maintenance, trailside repairs, off-bike instruction, first aid, calisthenics, and other things related to mountain biking and what mountain bikers do when it rains and you can't ride on the trails. Yes, Matilda wrote most of that.

Additional Skills & Instruction

In addition to the on-bike skills and instruction which will be the main focus of CLT MTB CAMP, we will also cover the following topics each week in the effort to teach our young riders how to be more well-rounded athletes and responsible human beings.

  • Nutrition & Hydration

  • Basic Trailside First Aid

  • Balance (Slackline, balance beam)

  • Physical Fitness (Basic Calisthenics)

  • Trail Stewardship

  • Outdoorsmanship

  • Bike Maintenance

  • Trailside Repairs

SUMMER 2019 SESSIONS

Jr Dev Session A - June 17-21 @ North Mecklenburg Park

CLT MTB Junior Development Session #A meets at North Mecklenburg Park. North Meck includes a 3.5mi loop of tight single track. The terrain is not overly technical, but it's fast and fun to ride. There are plenty of obstacles and places where the terrain will challenge young riders, This is where we will "session" different areas, giving young riders the chance to try a new skill or technique over and over again until they get it just right.

Session A is part of our new Junior Development Series and is specifically for intermediate-to-advanced riders aged 12-15 who are currently NICA racers or who are interested in signing up for NICA next year, or who are otherwise interested in mountain bike racing. The program will be advanced and the trail rides will be fast / at least 10mph average.

Jr Dev Session B - July 15 - 19 @ Park Rd Park/BYT

CLT MTB Junior Development Session #B Jr Development SESSION B Is definitely NOT for beginners : ) As the fabled trail signs read, BYT is not for Beginners (or “sissypants riders” <yes, that is what the signs say) and that is where we will be riding on a daily basis for these sessions. The terrain is technical, but it's also fast and super-fun to ride. We will NOT be focusing any time on the jump-park, as NICA racing is all about being fast and smooth and that’s the focus on these Jr Development program weeks… fast and smooth - winning races, not “style points”.
